It has been demonstrated that multiple viruses subvert cellular defense mechanisms by controlling the mitochondrial dynamics of the host. Selective elimination of damaged mitochondria, or mitophagy, can help maintain mitochondrial homeostasis. Recent studies on the role of mitophagy during viral infection improves our knowledge of the connections between mitophagy and viral pathogenesis. Our previous work have shown that several viruses both directly and indirectly modulate mitophagy and utilize various strategies to regulate the process. This gives viruses the powerful capacity to control and manipulate mitophagy to their advantage. In this talk, I will address the specific molecular mechanisms that various viruses employ to manipulate mitophagy for their life cycle and pathogenicity, as well as the important regulatory phases throughout viral infection in which mitophagy is implicated.
